Frequently Asked Questions
Storytelling coaching, you say?
It seems like everyone everywhere is competing for our attention. While we can instantly record videos and podcasts on our phones this means we’re up against the world as competition for an audience. How are you planning to cut through? I can help you make content that will be captivating and help you to stand out. I can help bring out the drama and interest in the story you are telling.
Whether you are in the planning or recording a video or podcast, writing scripts for content, or preparing to deliver an important keynote, we can do important work to hone whatever message you or your team are trying to convey. The earlier I am briefed, the more I can help shape the core dynamics of what you are working on and make the most positive impact. That will always be better than a coat of paint at the last minute. Ultimately, my expertise is in performance but as any good actor will tell you, a good script makes all the difference.
Do I need a lot of equipment to record a podcast?
The answer to this is a bit like ‘how long is a bit of string’. Recording a podcast can be anything from you and a bunch of friends huddled around a phone all the way up to renting expensive studios with engineers and mics worth thousands of dollars each.
The truth is you will need a dedicated mic of some sort. It doesn’t need to break the bank but the quality of the audio matters more than you probably think. Audio is all we have with a podcast and if it isn’t a certain level of quality, we’ll just turn it off. We’ll make exceptions if we are listening to someone extraordinarily interesting to us, but otherwise your chances of holding someone’s attention are not good without decent quality audio.
I’ll let you in on a secret though, the sound of the room you are in is at least as important as the mic, if not more. A cheap mic recorded in a quiet room with soft walls (think walk-in wardrobe), will sound a lot better than a mic worth thousands of dollars recorded in a bathroom.
Even so, you are going to need some gear if you are going to record them yourselves. I’ve written a little guide of what you’ll need to get started (Coming Soon).
Can we work remotely or will I need to come to a studio?
These days the vast majority of podcasts are recorded remotely using special software. Especially in these COVID times. With the right equipment, we can run a session connecting people anywhere and record a podcast live.
I am still a big believer that there is no substitute for getting people in the same room for a round table discussion if at all possible.
Coaching sessions are available both remotely and in person in Melbourne, Australia.
